ZAO WOU KI
China

(1920 - )
Zao Wou-ki is one of the most prominent Chinese artists of the twentieth century. Born in Beijing in 1921, Zao Wou-ki studied fine art in Hangzhou before moving to Paris in 1948, where his abstract (or semi-abstract) expressionist work achieved immediate recognition from artists such as Picasso and MirĂ³, and perhaps even more importantly from the influential Galerie Maeght. The transliteration of his name is controversial. He worked as Zao Wou-ki, but this is now sometimes rendered as Zao Wou Ki. A modern pinyin transliteration would be Zhao Wu Ji.
