| Zao Wou-ki is one of the most prominent Chinese artists of the twentieth century. Born in Beijing in 1921, Zao Wou-ki studied fine art in Hangzhou before moving to Paris in 1948, where his abstract (or semi-abstract) expressionist work achieved immediate recognition from artists such as Picasso and Miró, and perhaps even more importantly from the influential Galerie Maeght. The transliteration of his name is controversial. He worked as Zao Wou-ki, but this is now sometimes rendered as Zao Wou Ki. A modern pinyin transliteration would be Zhao Wu Ji. |
