Poet, writer, playwright, film-maker, stage designer and director, ceramicist, Cocteau was one of the truly universal men of the arts of the 20th century and he had astonishing success with whatever he touched. During his long career he was friendly with such diverse figures as Marcel Proust (he wrote one of the first reviews of 'Memories of Times Past'), Picasso, Stravinsky and all the leading artists, actors and musicians of his day. His influence on literature, theatre and cinema permeates the arts of the 20th century
