Le Calvaire is an original etching, soft ground and color héliogravure on Japanese paper, realized by Félicien Rops in 1882, signed on plate, plate from Les Sataniques In very good condition. The artwork represents a nude woman being suffocated by a crossed Satir creature, both suffering in a horror scene of violent erotic pleasure and pain. Félicien Victor Joseph Rops (1833-1898) was a Belgian artist associated with Symbolism and the Parisian Fin-de Siècle. He was a painter, illustrator, caricaturist, also a prolific and innovative printmaker, particularly in intaglio. Eroticism mixed with mortality and evil themes is one of the most prominent aspects of her work. He is best known for his graphic works, many of which are horror or erotic. Rops was educated in Brussels. His first drawings were published in the humorous newspaper Crocodile (1855) and Yulenspiegel. He also created watercolors. The praise given to him by writers such as Charles Baudelaire and Joris-Karl Huysmans placed him at the forefront of the decadent school of the late 19th century. He has lived in France since 1878. |
